Belvedere Zoo has been the subject of scrutiny for many years, see this article and this one. During my visit I did have the displeasure of witnessing some animal neglect, among other concerns. I have a video of the curly, overgrown hooves of their Mouflon A Manchettes (Barbary Sheep). I also noticed the enclosures were quite small and didn’t have any balls or other enrichment toys, particularly in the bear, lion, and baboon (?) enclosures. I noticed also that several peacocks were missing large chunks of feathers. Overall, I can see that the conditions of the animals appear much better than are described in previous accounts, which is a great thing.
The main purpose of these photographs was to capture what I call “casual beauty” of animals. The animals don’t serve me or owe me any kind of presence, so I don’t focus on any one particularly “beautiful” animal. The sheep take just as good a portrait as the fancy turkey.
